Privacy Policy

Novus ("we", "us", "our") is a personal finance coaching application operated in the United States. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the rights you have over your data. By using Novus, you agree to the practices described below.

1. Service availability

Novus is offered only to users located in the United States. We do not knowingly accept users or process data from individuals outside the U.S. If you access the Service from another jurisdiction, you do so on your own initiative and are responsible for compliance with local law.

2. Information we collect

Account information. When you sign up, we collect your name, email address, password (stored hashed), and any profile details you choose to provide.

Financial data via Plaid. Novus uses Plaid Inc. ("Plaid") to securely connect to your bank, credit card, and other financial accounts. When you link an account, you authorize Plaid to access information such as account balances, transaction history, account and routing numbers (where applicable), and account holder details. Plaid transmits this data to Novus so we can display it in the app and generate coaching insights. Your bank credentials are entered directly into Plaid and are never seen or stored by Novus. Plaid's handling of your information is governed by the Plaid End User Privacy Policy.

Payment information. Subscription payments are processed by Stripe, Inc. We do not store full card numbers on our servers; Stripe stores and processes that data under its own security and privacy program.

Usage data. We collect basic technical information such as device type, browser, IP address, and interaction events necessary to operate, secure, and improve the Service.

3. AI coaching and how your data is used

Novus offers an AI-powered coach ("Ask Novus") that generates personalized feedback about your spending, goals, and financial behavior. To produce these responses, we send relevant context from your account — such as recent transactions, category totals, goals, and the messages you write — to our AI model provider, Anthropic, PBC ("Anthropic"). Anthropic processes this data on our behalf to generate a response and returns it to Novus.

We do not use your financial data or chat content to train any third-party AI model, and we have contractual arrangements with Anthropic that prohibit them from using your inputs to train their models. AI responses are generated probabilistically and should not be treated as professional financial, legal, or tax advice.

4. How we use your information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide, operate, and maintain the Service;
  • Display your accounts, transactions, and goals;
  • Generate AI coaching insights and recommendations;
  • Process subscription billing and prevent fraud;
  • Communicate with you about your account, security, and product updates;
  • Comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.

5. Third-party service providers

We share information only with vendors that help us operate the Service, and only to the extent necessary for them to perform their function. Our key sub-processors are:

  • Plaid — secure connections to your financial institutions and retrieval of account and transaction data.
  • Supabase — managed database, authentication, and backend infrastructure where your account and financial data are stored.
  • Anthropic — large-language-model provider that powers the Ask Novus AI coach.
  • Stripe — payment processing for subscriptions and free-trial card verification.

Each of these providers is contractually required to protect your data and use it only for the purposes we authorize.

6. We do not sell your data

Novus does not, and will never, sell, rent, or trade your personal information or financial data to advertisers, data brokers, or any other third party. We do not share your data for cross-context behavioral advertising.

7. Data retention

We retain your account information, linked-account metadata, and transaction history for as long as your account is active so that we can provide the Service. If you cancel your subscription but keep your account, we continue to store your data until you request deletion.

When you delete your account, we delete or de-identify your personal information, financial data, and chat history within thirty (30) days, except where we are required to retain limited records to comply with legal, tax, accounting, or fraud-prevention obligations. Backup copies are purged on our standard backup rotation, typically within ninety (90) days.

8. Your rights and choices

You may, at any time:

  • Access and update your profile information from the Profile screen;
  • Disconnect any linked financial institution from the app;
  • Export a copy of your data by emailing the address below;
  • Request permanent deletion of your account and associated data.

Depending on your state of residence, you may have additional rights under U.S. state privacy laws (for example, the California Consumer Privacy Act). To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the email below. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your privacy rights.

9. Security

We use industry-standard safeguards — including encryption in transit (TLS), encryption at rest, role-based access controls, and row-level security — to protect your information. No system is perfectly secure, but we work continuously to reduce risk.

10. Children

Novus is not directed to children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you by email or through the Service before the changes take effect. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
